Lesson 3/Chapter 1
How are Animals Classified?
Vertebrates
**vertebrates are animals with backbone! **there are 5 groups of vertebrates: mammals-birds-fish-reptiles-amphibians |
Invertebrates
**invertebrates are animals with no backbone! **there are many types/groups of invertebrates: mollusks-sponges-arthropods |
3rd Week of School
Sunday 29th to Thursday 3rd of October
We have finished Lesson 1, they all did very well in the lesson quiz! :)
This week, we have started Lesson 2:
Chapter 1, Lesson 2: How are Plants and Fungi classified?
This week, we have started Lesson 2:
Chapter 1, Lesson 2: How are Plants and Fungi classified?
Plant Kingdom is classified into two large groups:
Vascular plants and Non Vascular Plants 1) Vascular Plants: Vascular means "having tubes". Vascular plants have tubes that carry water and food to all the plants' parts. Vascular Plants have 3 systems: roots-stems-leaves All parts in the vascular plants work together to help the plant grow and be healthy. The roots absorb water and nutrients from the soil. Roots also anchor (hold) the plant in the soil. Stems connect the flower and leaves with the roots, stems also take water and food to all the plant's parts. Leaves are the factory of the plant, they make food :) This process is called "photosynthesis". Photosynthesis: Leaves' cells have a part called chloroplasts, this part helps the plant makes its own food. Chlorophyll is a substance in the chloroplasts that gives the leaves the green color. During photosynthesis, leaves absorb sunlight, water, and carbon dioxide (a kind of gas), and give off oxygen. This is how plants make their own food ! |
2nd Week of School
Sunday 22nd to Thursday 26th of September
We have started Lesson 1, Chapter 1, Unit A
Classifying Living Things
All living things are called: organisms
All organisms are made up of tiny building blocks called: cells
we can only see cells under the microscope !
**Please check out this presentation, it will help you to better understand how living things are different than nonliving things.

How do scientists classify organisms?
Scientists used to classify all organisms into two groups or (kingdoms):
Animal Kingdom and Plant Kingdom. **Animals need to eat, and they need to move around to get their food. **But plants make their own food! They don't move to get their food. |
Scientists started to observe "Fungi".
Fungi don't make their own food and they don't move as well! So, scientists couldn't put fungi into animal's or plant's kingdom. **Fungi became their own kingdom. Now we have "animal, plant, and Fungi" kingdoms :)http://www.factmonster.com/dk/encyclopedia/fungi.html#id2822058 Then MICROSCOPES were invented!! Scientists were able to see new organisms that they couldn't see before, because these organisms are microscopic! We can only see them under the microscope!! These organisms are like BACTERIA and PROTISTS ! Now we have 5 kingdoms: 1) Animal kingdom 2) Plant kingdom 3) Fungi kingdom 4) Bacteria kingdom 5) Protist kingdom |
**Please check out this presentation about classifying organisms. (Monday, Sept. 23rd)

1st Week of School
Sunday 15th to Thursday 19th of September
In the first week of school we have learned about some scientific tools.
